Last month saw thousands of dancers from across the globe descend on Blackpool to compete in the biggest street dance competition in the world - the UDO Street Dance World Championships.
We couldn’t resist the opportunity to get some of the young people we work with through our satellite clubs programme involved so that they could be inspired to continue their street dance journeys!
On Wednesday 21st August 40 dancers from Manchester, Blackpool and Wigan took part in a VIP masterclass with UDO Worlds Judge and professional dancer Gemma Hoddy (who you may also remember from our National Schools Final judging panel!). Gemma took the group through their paces teaching them a high energy hip-hop routine. The dancers got the chance to perform in smaller groups and at the end of the session they battled it out together.
Gemma also answered some of the groups burning questions about life as a professional dancer, the dance industry and what it takes to carry on and make it as a world class performer.
The group received a backstage tour of the UDO Worlds set up at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool and were amazed to see the amount of work that goes in to making the event a success.
Following the day we received some brilliant feedback. Joe Pennington, Dance Youth Worker at Wigan Youth Zone and one of our delivery partners said ‘wanted to say a big thank you for the invitation to the event on the 21st in Blackpool. The young people loved it and are still buzzing about it a week later’. The young people who attended also gave some brilliant feedback on instagram and twitter and at the end of the workshop every single person felt that they had learnt something new and felt more confident to carry on street dancing.
Watch this space for our next Step Up and masterclass opportunities coming soon!
